Just some thing which i came across...
"Today, if there's frugality, I'm ready. I'll do corrugated again. It's fun to work that way, and it's easy. Why spend all the money for fancy details and stuff? You don't need it. You can get the passion with simpler things."
A point which Gehry has made here is that the Visual realm isnt the only bastion of a designer, a good building is one which has come out through a consolidation of the critical position of all such issues such as material, technology, technique, craftsmanship and a lot more which constitutes the program of a building....Only if the designer gets beyond his/her fascination of the VISUAL aesthetics shall the true form of a process come forth..and then its a matter of applying rules of aesthetics, composition, color etc to the unique form.
Building form is not a result of Visual satisfaction but an assemblage resultant of the thorough churning of relevant issues impacting its production. The production of space is impossible without bringing forth the factual parametres in real time..all else is simply ART and not Architecure....an artist can paint square wheels of a cannon to showcase futility of war yet the architect has to make the same point using round wheels and cannon....
Many have a lopsided idea about Frank O Gehry, that he has a fixed oveuere, yet on reading his works and also stuff authored by him, one gets a deeper idea and can connect iwth him on a much more humane level. A 3hr long documentary on him opened up nice areas to know his working better. The documentary is Frank Gehry Sketches..
I absolutely agree with MVD and would add a few strokes of my own. Not only the lay man but also architects now a days see the success of a building in two criterion. Firstly, how "Modern" is a building. They judge the so called "modern"ness by the use of latest materials and architectural gizmos. Whereas the true modernity of a building lies in a new interpretation of an age old design program. For example a university is principally the same since a long long time. But the area program and its interpretation today would be entirely different than what it was 50 years ago. The second criteria that the majority of architects apply to declare a building a success is the cost factor. It is automatically assumed that a five star hotel cannot be built with the sensibilities of a low-cost housing. I would like to come across a luxurious environment (which is not in Bali or other such "exotic" locale) built with down to earth and low cost materials. I would definitely be more than interested in doing such a project.
Great view Rui...i suggest you should look into the string of works generated by Ar. Nimish Patel and Parul Jhaveri especially for the Oberoi 5 start hotel chain in and around rajasthan....the definition of luxury is nicely positioned with vernacular traditional methods and systems of architecture and building design...
