31st Party and a lot more.....

http://www.dezeen.com/2010/04/07/apartments-by-tissellistudioarchitetti/

some kind of a reference to discuss the straight sharp volumes and lines of GARWARE club......

i thought the rhythm in this project is well composed and is really accentuated by the choice of color, material which also adds color, and off course overall composition of the built form, the edges...

The rigor of architectural form being derived from the quality of material specification, in addition to good quality of execution; is testimony enough for any designer that simple systems work the best even if you manage to get them executed well..

some food for thought to all of us when we set our lines on paper...hehehe

enjoy the reference...chow...am running off for the 31st party nowwwww

remember..remember ...the 30th of december...

Wow...what a day...n WHAT A CAKE!!!!...The New Year party yesterday was an absolute hit. People had put in a lot of thought into the gifts they'd brought. Basically everybody was delighted and had a blast. And did i tell you bout the cake?!....Yummy chinese food and some groovy music (courtesy Rohit) set the pace. We couldnt have had a better Santa than Kowli Sir. I mean even the original Santa would have had a major complex if he would've seen the spirit and heart which Kowli Sir put into his role. And did I tell you about the cake?!...I know each and everyone would've taken home happy and delicious memories from the party yesterday...And did i tell u bout the cake?!...

Results of Poll 1 - SPA Times

Viewpoint & Analysis of the results!

1. 6 people voted - a fantastic start! especially considering that it is over 30% of the total group strength.
2. 66% thought it was a good start - which encourages us to continue with the magazine.
3. We commend the 2 people who thought we need better content - which encourages us to try harder.
4. Since 6 people voted, we know that people (other than Mandar & Ruhi) actually read the blog. Great!

Thanks for the answers. Look out for more polls in the future!

SLabs at varying heights in same structure...

http://www.arcspace.com/architects/sejima_nishizawa/zollverein/zollverein.html

i have been exploring specifically volumes with varying heights for currently two projects CSSC and the MCGM School at SPA, and SANAA have always provided a few examples of such kind of an architecture.

A good reference is the School they designed with varying slab levels. I wish the CSSC project and the school both are able to take it up from here.

here's hoping this new year...

Its Christmas!!!!

We, at SPA, take fun very seriously...Thats the reason why Kavita proposed a fun game to be played at the New Year party on 30th December. It comprises of each person in the office gifting another. Sounds simple enough?!...the twist is that everyone has to it anonymously and the recipient has to guess who the person is. Another twist is that the recipients are decided by pick of lots. the value of the gift should not exceed 50 bucks. this adds a little more challenge to the whole gift selection process. At first I was disappointed when "a certain person"'s name appeared on my chit as i dint know him that well, but then Ruth pointed it out to me that the spirit of Christmas says that you should give and celebrate this occassion with people with whom you might not talk or interact otherwise. And then it dawned on me how right she was!! I hope everyone puts all their grey cells to worka nd think of innovative and funny gifts to give and not stop at just chocolates, of course they would be ideal for nikhil and denzil!

sketches at SPA....

Ward office at Kausa for TMC.....explorations by Mandar
Every design has a potential to start doing something which the designer doesnt expects; in the positive sense i mean. Suddenly the design starts to have a language of its own and as if it is speaking back to the designer...something moves, something beckons, something wants to break free and something wants to deeply stay rooted......

this sketch could generate such kind of a dialouge while working thru...the sketch is an excercise of working on 3 grids simultaneoulsy; viz: the activity program grid SPATIAL grid, the Movement or FLOW grid, the open UNBUILT VOIDS grid......i love it all the more when these 3 grids give rise to a new language...a 4th GRID of time...

Does any one wants to try this......its good..

http://www.shinkenchiku.net/skc/en/index.html

JURY BRIEF AND COMMENTS:

The theme of the competition this time is “A New Spirit”. I am seeking proposals that suggest new dwellings for a new era.
The houses we live in today are comfortable and wonderful in their own way, but many were created in the past. Most were created for, not the times to come, but a way of life and a society of the past. Times change; the form of society changes, as does human life. Our lives today are markedly different from lives a century ago. Houses in every age of history have vividly expressed the intensity and wonder of human life. We ought to be capable of conceiving a residential image that suggests how wonderful life is in our own era.
To conceive a new house is also to conceive a lifestyle for a new era, to explore the possibilities for amazing ways of life in the times to come. It is to ask, what are the new values of our era? what is the new spirit that makes new houses possible? The expression of a new spirit may require an approach different from that of the past. The result may not resemble what we now imagine to be a house. Circumstances may require the remaking of the city itself. No particular conditions will be set regarding the place it is to be situated in, or the people or life it is to accommodate ─ you are free to design as you see fit. I am hoping for highly imaginative depictions of wonderful buildings that suggest the future, buildings that clearly demonstrate the wonder of contemporary human life.

A Mumbaiya public building is possible....

Definition of what is !!PUBLIC!! in the real sense; in a contextual setting such as mumbai City....is extremely complex and arguably the most rich in its character......

to design for such an open ended target issue is exciting....it is a challenge to the quality of detail for an urban place....

right from a simple detail for rain water disposal from a pavement to the basic corner detailing for wall/planes junctions....

an university in such an open ended context is a great opportunity to explore this palette of urban detailing....

how different is a public building in mumbai and in any other city in the vicinity....in the country then....and finally the world...how much of all this, can the building be and how much specific can it become to the rootedness of its very being...how much mumbaiya can the building get....

exciting and challenging....needs lots of discussion yet..

Tactical detailing and definition to the architectural elements...

Nothing special this...just stray thoughts..

is it the design that excites the mind or is it the working of the design or is it the working for a design.....these 3 stages do excite the mind at various times as when one deals with them in the entire process of problem definition to solution, resolution..

but what has being intriguing is the working for design....the HOW for designing than the actual design....i guess its a primary position to effect a difference in the final outcome....'different' design is an outcome of the way one 'percieves and positions' the problem and opens up possibilities to look at articulating and resolving that problem....how differently or how effectively does one percieves...knowledge, thought, insight...they all are actively participating to generate that difference...

great initiative...

This blog could be the biggest thing in the present times which has happened to SPA only if we all know how to use it. Its a very nice medium to express our thoughts about subjects that we generally dont talk about( i admit, which are not many). The greatest thing about a blog is that all our thoughts would become a face for our studio. I hope we all contribute instinctively and meaningfully to this and make it the success it has been intended to be.

What is an IDEA???

Hmmmm........am trying to position myself wrt the most fundamental question in design.....

what is an IDEA ???? !!!!!

is it a fleeting thought?
a well thought over compact thought? a condensed thought ?
is it insight??
is it the concept??
.........
Great idea to start this BLOG........networking and communication is the key to a better positioning of work process for times to come...
